~The Cross and the Tomb~
~H. Edward Rowe~
The cross, the cross, the lonely cross,
So distant from the Father's face!
He gave His all, at awful cost -
For Adam's fallen human race.
The cross, the cross, the ugly cross
Where human hate His judgment sealed -
He suffered there eternal loss,
That from our sin we may be healed.
The tomb, the tomb, the silent tomb
Where Jesus, King of Glory lay -
That darkened, damp and lonely room!
They placed Him there that bloody day.
The tomb, the tomb, the cruel tomb -
The rightful place for human clan!
That dark and damp and lonely room
Abode of the Holy Son of Man!
The tomb, the tomb, the lonely tomb -
All tenderly they laid Him there
Within that dark and lonely room -
With tender love and faithful care.
The tomb, the tomb, the lifeless tomb,
In graveclothes bound all motionless -
That spider-decorated room
Received the Son of Righteousness.
The tomb, the tomb, the distant tomb -
Reward for deeds of righteousness!
For three days in that prison room
He waited there the world to bless.
But darkest days will turn all bright,
And faithful hearts will loudly praise
The Lord in resurrection Light -
For He Himself from death will raise!
'Twas brighter than the brightest morn -
'Twas Heaven's brightest Glory Day -
Now sinners to new life are born,
For Heaven's Grace has come to stay.
Let nations to His welcome rise
And join the triumph of the skies!
The tomb is empty once for all!
His Grace has saved us from the fall!
